What is Emotional Intelligence and Why is it important?

Emotional Intelligence (EI, also known as Emotional Quotient, or EQ) is our ability to recognize and name our emotions, in the moment, and to use that information to better manage our thoughts and behavior. Social Intelligence is our ability to recognize the emotions of others and to use that information to better manage our relationships. Together they are very powerfully "Social and Emotional Intelligence" or SEI.

There are several models of EQ; I use the one provided hrtough the Institute for Social and Emotional Intelligence, where I received my Certification as an Emotional Intelligence Coach. This model includes four quadrants: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social-Awareness, and Relationship Management. These four quadrants include 26 competencies of SEI.

Emotional Intelligence is listed as one of the most sought after skills of the decade. It is arguably more important than IQ in business and in life, and it evidentually can positively affect a person's wellbeing: mentally, physically, and spiritually.
